Latin American Association of Development
Financing Institutions (ALIDE)

ALIDE - 1968

Is an international non-governmental organisation which represents institutions that finance development in Latin America and the Caribbean.  Its aim is to promote the cohesion, strengthening and participation of financial institutions in  social and economic fields of the region.  ALIDE has a varied membership made up of institutions which operate in the field of financing development . They fall into 3 categories;

  • Active members: financial institutions, public or private, from Latin American countries and the Caribbean, which undertake financial development work either exclusively or in conjunction with other intermediary work.

  • Associate members: financial bodies which contribute to Latin American economic development ,whether it be worldwide, regional or local.

  • Collaborating-members: other financial or financially related institutions , from Latin American countries and the Caribbean, or outside the region- national or international, who share the aims of ALIDE and contribute to economic and social development in a direct form or via monetary and financial policies.

The permanent headquarters of ALIDE are in the city of Lima, in the Republic of Peru. The headquarters is at the centre of  a system of national coordinators and institutional contacts in all Latin American and Caribbean countries.  ALIDE is financed by its members and by international cooperation organisations and agencies. The annual budget is supplemented by the generation of its own revenue from tertiary services.

Over 38 years, the General Assembly has held a variety of meetings which have provided important forums for the analysis of current themes concerning the work of development financing instutions in Latin America and the Caribbean.  These forums are held annually, with an average of 300 representatives of the main institutions which are linked to the financing and development of the region attending.

For the fulfillment of its goals and function, ALIDE has developed a variety of services which are at the disposal of its member institutions via institutional, national and international programmes:

  • Technical Assistance: advisory programmes specialised for making diagnostic and monitoring systems and for the re-design of operative processes.

  • Training: national and internacional courses and seminars, organised with the participation of the members and specialist institutions. They are arranged to better knowledge and the exchange of experiences between executive and technical bodies of the financial institutions.

  • Teaching: a Teaching Programme (PAS) which includes short term in-job training programmes (1 or 2 weeks) on the experience, practical operation and general procedures of the member institutions. The Technical Assistance in-job Training Programme (PAT) deals with varied themes which the member institutions request for discussion. ALIDE advises the institutions wanting help by identifying themes, arranging visits and drawing up plans of action.

  • Studies and Research: with the participation of the member institutions, ALIDE systematically analizes, with a pragmatic focus, different aspects related to the problems of financing development.The results of the studies and investigations, as well as building up important reference material on the business of financing development, contribute to the adoption of policies and practical measures in development banking and to the design of strategies suitable for the work being carried out.

  • Technical Meetings: ALIDE organises, sponsors and cosponsors general meetings, informal meetings, seminars etc. on  institutional, national , district and regional levels, which are arranged with the aim of collecting plans and new perspectives on themes concerned with practical policies, as well as dealing with administration and the development of institutions which finance development.

  • Information and Documentation: ALIDE relies upon the Documentation Centre (CEDOM) which compiles and distributes bibliographic material and technical documentation related to development banking fields of interest, as well as having information on materials relative to specific economic sectors and technological aspects. In order to have a wide and varied range of information available, CEDOM has developed the information network RIALIDE, which collects specialised documentation concerned with banking and financing development.

  • Promotion of Projects and Investment: ALIDE provides information relevant to the projects which financial institutions want to further, for example, information on the principle characteristics and conditions of coparticipation in a project using external financinal sources. It relies on both a project and investment network and a Financial and Technological Information Service (SIFT) , which consist of sources of promotion and information to support the financial institutions´ research and their contact with businesses, investors, official agencies and general sources of finance and investment.

ALIDE promotes the publication and editing  of documents which, for their quality, innovation and importance, represent a substantial support to the work of the institutions, for the benefit of development banking.
