Association of National Development Finance Institutions in Member Countries of the Islamic Development Bank (ADFIMI)

ADFIMI - 1986

Already in 1982 at the annual meeting of the Islamic Development Bank in Istanbul the governors presented a recommendation for getting the national development banks in its member countries organized in an association. This suggestion was transformed into reality in March 1986 at the annual meeting held in Amman. The representatives of national development banks convened a constituent assembly on March 19, 1986 for the establishment of the Association of National Development Finance Institutions in Member Countries of the Islamic Development Bank (ADFIMI). Until its headquarters was established, the Association would operate within the Islamic Development Bank in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Abdulaziz Kuntoadji, a former president of the Development Bank of Indonesia, and an advisor to the Islamic Development Bank, became its first secretary general and Rajab Salim As-Saad of Jordan was its first chairman. ADFIMI was relocated from Jeddah in 1987 to Istanbul, with Aydemir Koç from Turkey becoming its second secretary general. After ten years in this position, Aydemir Koç was succeeded as secretary general by Orhan Sağci of Turkey in 1997, who is currently also the secretary general of the World Federation of Development Finance Institutions (WFDFI). Its membership of 57 now spans three continents and 19 countries. The ADFIMI web-site is: http://www.adfimi.org
