In 1992 six European development finance institutions, providing
investment for private sector development in developing and transition
countries, created EDFI -- the European Development Finance
Institutions. This association, which now has twelve members, is
located at the seat of the European Union (EU) in Brussels,
Belgium.
EDFI's principal purpose is to exchange views on development
cooperation with European Union institutions. It represents its
members on appropriate occasions and it facilitates closer ties with
EU programs and institutions. EDFI also organizes seminars amongst its
members, or with the participation of other financial
institutions, on
topics of private sector development.
EDFI emerged out of "Interact", an informal grouping of
European development finance institutions working in both the private
and public sectors. The experience of Interact led to the formal
establishment of EDFI, which is confined to development finance
institutions working in the private sector. Sean Magee of the United
Kingdom is currently the "Representative" of EDFI. The EDFI
website is: www.edfi.be
