Ohio State
University's, The Rural Finance Program
|
The
Ohio State University's (OSU) program is a recognized world
leader in the analysis of rural financial markets and other
finance and development questions, particularly those
concerning the design and implementation of financial reform
and restructuring programs, the establishment of prudential
regulation and supervision frameworks, and the provision of
financial services to difficult clienteles (small farmers,
rural and urban microenterprises, the poor, women) in
developing countries. This reputation has resulted from
three decades of distinguished research, publications,
instruction, technical assistance, and information
dissemination. Under FIRM, OSU's research agenda encompassed
three main areas:
-
the analysis of informal
financial markets (particularly in the rural areas) and their
linkages to formal financial and other markets;
-
the evaluation of the performance (outreach,
sustainability, organizational design, and operational
effectiveness) of financial institutions and organizations,
particularly of those serving the rural areas or small and
microenterprises, and
-
investigations of macroeconomic
policy, financial market restructuring and reform, and
prudential regulation and supervision.

for financial services, sound banking systems, strong
capital markets, a diversified financial system, and im-proved
access to financial services by the poor and by the small-

financial sector skills, the program emphasizes policy
dialogue and active collaborative problem-solving by the
participants. The program includes 26 learning activities on
